Tooth decay doesn't necessarily mean cavities but it is more than that. Tooth decay is caused because of bad oral hygiene. Having sensitive teeth, stained teeth, teeth covered with tartar, bleeding gums all these symptoms are caused due to bad oral hygiene. Below I have summarized the causes of tooth decay and how to avoid it.

CAUSES OF TOOTH DECAY

1 – Bad oral hygiene is the most common cause of tooth decay. If not given due attention then it causes major problems.
2 – Eating sugary foods increases the rate of tooth decay. The bacteria which are present in the mouth digest these sugary foods and turn them into acids which dissolve the enamel (outer surface of teeth).
3 – Food debris left in mouth along with bacteria and saliva form plaque which settles on teeth and causes cavities.
4 – Drinking coffee, tea or other similar beverages can cause yellowing of teeth. Using tobacco causes stains on teeth.
5 – Drinking acidic drinks like lemon juice or cola drinks causes serious damage to teeth.

TIPS TO PREVENT TOOTH DECAY

1 – Brush at least twice a day and regularly floss your teeth. Brushing before going to bed is highly recommended.
2 – Use fluoride containing toothpaste. Fluoride is good for healthy teeth and it prevents tooth decay. Drinking small amounts of fluoridated water also helps.
3 – Use products like Listerine which reduce plaque formation and help in removal of tartar.
4 – Avoid eating sugary foods many times a day. If you can’t stop yourself then take them with meals and brush after it.
5 – Avoid eating junk and packaged foods like wafers and biscuits. Take healthy snacks such as salad.
6 – If you think your teeth are not healthy and strong then you can take supplemental fluoride after checking it with your dentist.

These are some very common tips to prevent tooth decay but if followed properly then you will have healthy and shining teeth.
